Did you know Canada has an official National Health and Fitness Day? Well, we do! It's on Saturday, June 1, 2019. Read on to learn more about the day and the FREE fitness classes being offered at NVRC facilities!
Since 2014, the first Saturday in June is designated National Health and Fitness Day across the country. With a goal to make Canada the “fittest nation in the world” it’s a day set aside to encourage citizens to get out and get active in their communities.
Why should we celebrate?
#1 It’s good for you AND for Canada
While most of us know that physical activity is an important component in living a healthier life, not enough Canadians are active. In fact, recent Stats Canada data reveals only 54% of Canadians aged 12 and over are physically active in their leisure time. And what would happen if we were more active? We’d have fewer cases of chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. We’d have a smaller number of premature deaths, reduced healthcare costs and even a strengthened economy. And we’d all feel better! Clearly, good reasons to embrace exercise.
#2 It helps reinforce BC as the most active province in Canada
We on the west coast are particularly lucky. Not only do we live in a more temperate outdoor-friendly climate, but we have abundant spaces and programs that encourage residents to be active. So the good news is that almost 62% of British Columbians are active in their leisure time. This is 8% more than the national average, and the highest percentage of all the provinces. Let’s hear it for BC!
#3 It’s free
What can you do on National Health and Fitness Day? Walk the seawall, hike a mountain, run a trail or play tennis. If you’re a parent, play catch, kick a ball or even throw a Frisbee with your kids. There’s lots to do outside to get your heart pumping, benefit your health and boost your mood. And at no cost.
