Fun in Action

Meet Bennett, camp volunteer

Born in Toronto, Bennett and his family moved to North Vancouver when he was a toddler. Having grown up in North Vancouver, he feels at home in the trails, mountains and fresh air, “I love spending time in nature.” Bennett also loves camp, music and art. From the ages of 5-10, he remembers enjoying summer and winter camps at NVRC. “They were always so much fun,” he says, which is how he decided to return as a volunteer.

Empathy in Action

Those who can do, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.” – Author unknown

Bryn is a full-time student at Capilano University. Finishing his third year of studies towards a kinesiology degree, Bryn already has plans for his future career as a physiotherapist.

Community in Action

As part of National Volunteer Week (April 24-30, 2022), NVRC is showcasing some of the wonderful volunteers who donate their time, energy and compassion to make our programs hum, as well as define what it means to contribute to community. Janice, a long-time volunteer, shares her thoughts on what volunteering means to her.

Outstanding Youth in our Community

Why fit in when you were born to stand out?
– Dr. Seuss

The Capilano Youth Advisory Committee (CYAC) meets once a week after school at Delbrook Community Recreation Centre. The group of secondary school students comes together to create, plan and coordinate special events for youth and families in the community. Meetings are chaired by Chill Yin Lee, Recreation Programmer and Youth Coordinator for North Vancouver Recreation & Culture. The youth members are responsible to take meeting notes, create and coordinate events and be accountable to their commitments.

How Being Kind Is Good For You

As social creatures, we reciprocate like for like. When someone is nice to us, we tend to reflect that back. When we feel kindness, we also become more generous. The simplest indication of this social mirroring is facial expressions. When we see others smiling at us, our lips naturally curve upwards in response.

Meet Volunteer Louise

Louise is an active retiree who dedicates a lot of time to volunteering in her community.  As a Volunteer Ambassador at the new Delbrook Centre in 2017, Louise had the chance to do something she loves – meeting and helping lots of new people.  She enjoyed taking hundreds of residents on tours of the facility and she shares their excitement over all the Centre has to offer.  She especially enjoyed meeting the diverse members of our community – people of all ages and from many different cultures – and seeing how a community centre helps bring people together and create a sense of community.

Meet Kevin – Youth Volunteer with NVRC

Getting started as a volunteer
Kevin, a grade 10 student at Handsworth Secondary School, first learned about the volunteer opportunities with NVRC at his school when NVRC’s Volunteer Programmer, Meh Najak gave a presentation.  In the past three years he has more than fulfilled his school’s requirements for volunteer hours and he keeps on volunteering because, “It’s so much fun!”
