The passing of Glenn Ryder in 2013 marked the end of an era in nature observation and recording. No one in British Columbia and possibly anywhere else devoted so much time to the study of nature. He rejected a formal education for one in the woods. Nature was the only subject he cared for and the outdoors was the only classroom he willingly attended. Who was Glenn Ryder, what did he accomplish and why should we know him? Phil Henderson, a zoologist and environmental consultant from Fort Langley, B.C., had the good fortune to spend a lot of time with Glenn in the woods during the last 15 years of Glenn’s life.
