This lecture will explore the extraordinary work of African American contemporary painter, print-maker, film-maker and installation artist Kara Walker. Walker confronts systemic racism in her art, not just in its past manifestations, but also its ongoing persistence (as evidenced in the rise of the alt-right in the U.S.). By tapping into visual spectacle, epic narrative traditions, genteel crafts, and myths of the American South, Walker refuses to soften her point and creates an art of resistance. Cost: $15 Register by phone at 604-925-7270 (course # 41540) or online.
