Urban Woodworking classes coming soon!

In November 2018 NVRC will be offering woodworking courses taught by Jeremy Tomlinson, aka The Urban Woodworker. Jeremy is a highly experienced woodworker and wood turner, he has taught many students at other locations and his courses are very popular. These courses will teach students hand tool methods and techniques used in woodworking and furniture making.

The classes will take place in the new custom-outfitted Community Woodworking Studio at 135 West 1st Street (across the plaza from John Braithwaite Community Centre).

Join us for a tour of the new studio, demos and the opportunity to meet studio instructor Jeremy Tomlinson, The Urban Woodworker on November 1 from 5:00 – 7:00pm at the Community Woodworking Studio.

Woodworking Basics Level 1  

Learn the important basics such as the milling of rough lumber using core major power machines - the Jointer, Planer and Table saw. After this course you will have gained a better understanding of the material and how it challenges the maker. The project will offer the student a platform to learn basic joinery, assembly methods and a format for project planning.  After completion of this course you will have completed the admission requirements to use the shop for Drop-in sessions. Topics covered are as follows:
  1. Introduction to lumber classification, grain and moisture related movement
  2. Shop and machine safety
  3. Power tool milling
  4. Basic assembly methods
  5. Basic joinery
Choose 1 of 3 project examples that are a perfect fit with this course.
