Transcendent is inspired by the resilience and perseverance required to overcome challenges and obstacles in order to succeed, a spirit exemplified by Harry Jerome. The work manifests as a beautiful, dynamic and iconically -scaled sculptural form that soars high above the lobby space, reaching upwards and outwards towards the building’s exterior to envelop visitors inside and outside within its highly reflective surface.

The sculpture’s shape which is inspired by athletic surfaces such as tracks, courts, and arenas, appears as a curved elliptical form of varying width containing a mirrored surface on its underneath and side faces. In several sections of the sculpture, linear fissures unexpectedly cleave open its smooth skin, breaking up the mirrored surface into an array of smaller reflective planes that bend light in multiple directions, and exposing its brilliant blue-hued interior structure within.

Transcendent not only demonstrates how we all must believe in ourselves to keep striving forwards and to find a way to transcend the difficulties and impediments that stand in our way, the work also references the natural setting of North Vancouver and how moving water in the form of creeks, streams and rivers, is likewise always able to find a path around any obstacle that it finds in its way.
