After receiving dozens of creative, fun and cool-as-ice suggestions from the community, the winning names for our new electric Zambonis have officially been chosen!
At Karen Magnussen Community Recreation Centre, the Zamboni will be known as “Lightning McClean”. This name was submitted by three young residents – Thomas (age 7), Oskar (age 8) and Riley (age 10) – who shared their inspiration:
- “Because it’s electric and it cleans the ice.”
- “Fast and exciting but gets the ice nice and clean - and also good for kids who like Pixar.”
- “Fast, electric and funny.”
Meanwhile, at the new Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre, the Zamboni will take to the ice as “Rink Raven”. This imaginative name came from 11-year-old Zakarie, who explained their choice by saying:
- “It reflects the Coast Salish stories and beautiful nature surrounding in North Vancouver. Raven is a powerful, magic and transformative creature.”
“Out of all the clever and creative entries we received, these names stood out as the perfect fit for the new electric Zambonis,” says Heather Turner, NVRC Director, Recreation & Culture. “They capture the fun and energy that fills our arenas.”
The Karen Magnussen Zamboni, Lightning McClean, will receive a custom decorative wrap and make its debut in the coming months. The Harry Jerome Zamboni, Rink Raven, will roll out for its on-ice debut when the new centre opens next year.
A huge thank you to everyone who submitted ideas and congratulations to our winners for helping make our beloved Zambonis even more special for the community.
We can’t wait to see Lightning McClean and Rink Raven gliding across the ice soon!
