New public art series at Lynn Creek Community Recreation Centre celebrates nature, adventure and community connections

Visitors to North Vancouver’s new Lynn Creek Community Recreation Centre are in for a treat as they explore The Wilderness Within, an imaginative public art series by acclaimed local artist Carson Ting. The art series draws inspiration from the rich wilderness surrounding Lynn Creek and the adjacent vibrant, diverse community. Through a playful mural and vivid sculptures, The Wilderness Within offers a visual journey that connects people with both the natural world and their neighbourhood.

Wilderness Within: Neighbourhood – first floor mural
Located next to the elevator on the first floor, Wilderness Within: Neighbourhood features a striking mural created from eight wood-burnt panels, forming an illustrated map of the Lynn Creek town centre. The map highlights local amenities—from parks and trails to businesses, transportation routes and residential areas—offering a snapshot of the area's unique character.

The mural is brought to life with playful animal caricatures, including a series of cleverly camouflaged bunnies. Viewers can discover these hidden creatures as they explore the piece, making for a fun, interactive experience.

Wilderness Within: Retreat & Emergence – stairwell sculptures
The Wilderness Within also includes two colorful polyurethane coated sculptures located in the centre’s stairwell landings. These whimsical pieces pay tribute to the nearby Seylynn Snake Run, Canada's oldest existing skate bowl, and celebrate the area’s youthful energy and love for outdoor adventure.

The first sculpture, Wilderness Within: Retreat, features a skateboarding bunny riding a rainbow through an interdimensional portal. Situated on the first landing, this piece draws visitors into a world of imagination. On the top landing, visitors encounter Wilderness Within: Emergence where the same bunny reappears after an adventure in the wilderness. Together, these sculptures embody themes of exploration, transformation and joy, encouraging viewers of all ages to tap into their inner sense of playfulness and wonder.

“The works serve as a reminder of the deep connection between humanity, nature and community,” says Ting. “Through this series, I hope to inspire people to find joy in their surroundings and reconnect with their sense of adventure, no matter their age.”

In a separate public art project for the developer of the adjoining building, Ting created the rooftop mural, Eternal Rhythms, that can be seen from many vantage points in the neighbourhood.
