Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre - Local Coast Salish Artwork

Status
Closed

The North Vancouver Recreation & Culture Commission and City of North Vancouver are inviting Expressions of Interest from artists working in the local Coast Salish tradition, to create contemporary indigenous artwork(s) that will honour and reflect the traditional land peoples on which a new community recreation centre will be built.

The new Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre is located on the north side of Burrard Inlet, the traditional Coast Salish territory of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Tsleil-Waututh, Nations who have lived throughout this region for thousands of years.   This public art opportunity focuses on the installation of Coast Salish art along the north/south axis of the new HJCRC facility: the arena, lounge area, and courtyard.  The courtyard is situated at the heart of the complex and is visible from multiple vantage points beginning with the front entrance atrium, then circling around to the pool, arena, and gymnasium. The new arena will receive a Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) namesake (yet to be determined), making this area, a desired location for local Coast Salish art.
