The Northern Dawn was the last wooden boat built by Sam Matsumoto. Based in Prince Rupert, Matsumoto built boats before World War II but was interned during the war years. After the war he established Matsumoto Shipyards on Dollarton Highway in North Vancouver and became a leader in aluminum boat construction. The Matsumoto Shipyards closed in 1989 but boat building continued as part of Allied Shipyards.

Liz Calvin has been passionate about creating mosaics for over 25 years. In addition to creating new works, she has shared her love for the medium by teaching adult classes and mentoring youth projects. Her public art pieces can be found on the sidewalks of downtown Vancouver, at Lonsdale Quay, the Parkgate Community Centre and at Noble Cove Housing Project on the North Shore.
