The images and texts on these manhole covers represents the following themes as defined by the artist:

Salmon: celestial cues (one of the many tools by the salmon for navigation), sinking tips (lures used by sporting and commercial fishermen), mad dashes (attempts by salmon to make it up the river against all obstacles), ghost runs (old salmon runs that are all gone)

Forest: Shakedown (name for North Vancouver during the logging boom), fish-oil (used to slick down skid-roads), millpond (where the logs floated before going to the mills for processing), flume (chutes made of wood to send logs down as an alternate to skid-roads)

Railway Industry: crossing (railway crossing), trestle (refers to the many original trestle bridges in and around North Vancouver), streetcar (the advent of electricity brought in the streetcar), spur-line (railway spur-line)

Shipping: war-dog (name of a ship built during the war years), shift (refers to shift-work done and how the whole town evolved around shift time), frenzy (the state of activity in the shipping industry especially during the war), rivet (rivets used to fabricate the parts of steel ships)

Consciousness: witness (we are the eyes and consciousness to what is/ has/ will occur), transform (we can make changes where there is need, will and consciousness), dream (each individual can dream there own story), resurrect (we can resurrect things we regret having lost - the salmon, forests, and ourselves)

About the Artist:
Katherine Kerr (A.O.C.A., BFA., B.Arch.) is a nationally and internationally awarded artist, designer and poet with backgrounds in the visual arts and architecture. Katherine has designed, fabricated and installed site integrated artworks in prominent interior and exterior public spaces.
