The red, green and black triangles in this piece represent the amalgamation of the three Squamish reserves, Senakw, Squamish Valley and Sunshine Coast, and 16 families (or Bands) into one Squamish Nation on July 23, 1923.  At its inception, there were 422 members of the Squamish Nation.  In 2023, 100 years later, the Squamish Nation has more than 3,000 members.

Honouring the Ancestors

This weaving is inspired by the robes worn by Sa7plek Chief Joe Capilano.  Blankets and robes woven in the traditional Salish style invoke the ancestors to help and protect the wearer.  Sa7plek Chief Joe Capilano famously donned these robes during his overseas trip to England to petition the king for Indigenous rights in 1906.
