Celebrations & Events Grants

Celebrations & Events Grants support both small and large scale community events that foster community connections and that contribute to residents’ quality of life and sense of identity.  The program seeks to sustain and encourage growth in existing events and to support the development of new events in two main categories: Community Events and Major Celebrations.

Applications will be accepted in two intakes:

Early Intake

The 2018 Early Intake opens on Monday September 25th, 2017 and closes on Tuesday October 17th, 2017 and provides grant support for events or festivals that commence or take place between January 1 and May 31, 2018.

Main Intake

The 2018 Main Intake opens on Monday February 5th, 2018 and closes on Tuesday February 27th, 2017 and provides grant support for events or festivals that commence or take place between June 1 and December 31, 2018.

Applications must be submitted no later than 4:30 pm on the appropriate deadline.

Application Materials

Applications to the Celebrations & Community Grants  program are accepted in two categories:

​1.  Community Events

Grants are available up to a maximum of $6,500 to support neighbourhood-based celebrations and community events that provide opportunities for diverse populations to come together.  Community Events are typically single-day events that:

  • encourage congregation and evoke a sense of celebration
  • express the diversity and uniqueness of our communities
  • foster community connectivity
  • are inclusive, welcoming and entertaining and
  • provide opportunities for local talent

2.   Major Celebrations & Festivals

Grants are available up to a maximum of $20,000 to support large-scale, multi-day cultural celebrations and professional arts festivals. 
All applicants in this category should have an established audience or be able to show clear potential for significant audience development and should offer participants and audiences a relatively unique experience not duplicated by other organizations and their activities.
Cultural Celebrations:
  • present a significant program of cultural activities and entertainments
  • may mix arts programming with cultural attractions, entertainments, demonstrations and other activities to create a full event or festival program
  • encourage congregation and celebrate community connectivity
  • express the diversity and uniqueness of our communities
Arts Festivals:
  • present a coordinated program of artistically connected activities, exhibits or performances
  • should be innovative and entertaining
  • inspire awareness of local and visiting talent and
  • foster appreciation of arts and culture, heritage and other creative pursuits

Multi-Year Support

At the recommendation of the Grants Committee, grant awards in the Major Celebrations category may be approved for up to three (3) years.

Eligible Applicants include:
  • registered not-for-profit arts and culture organizations
  • other recognized arts groups
  • community service groups
  • community associations; merchants’ associations or business improvement associations
  • multi-cultural and ethno-cultural organizations
  • charitable organizations, and
  • other recognized community groups
